They are copies of a 16 mm film because they weren’t using video cameras yet. The shots are from a programme aired on Swiss television in 1975 in connection with the Säntis project, which I did it with Bernard Tagwerker. Although the “Sand Stairs” date from 1973, they were not filmed until 1975. The black-and-white photograph shows stairs made of sheet iron and quartz sand. The point was to build a construction. A human being builds a construction: these stairs. Then I just emptied a bucket of sand onto them. The result was this sculpture."
